Impersonation – a serious form of cyberbullying?

default_cyberbullying

It goes without saying that youth are exploiting new technological developments (even though everyone is saying it).  I wondered if you all saw the story from Maryland over Christmas break discussing how teenagers are punking their peers by impersonating their vehicles while flying past speed cameras.  This is done by taking a digital photo of an “enemy’s” license plate, printing it out with a laser printer, and taping that sheet of paper onto their own license plate.  Then, they drive past cameras that cannot distinguish between real license plate numbers and the laser-printed ones.  Called “speed pimping,” it leads to a $40 citation for the victim.  So, this begs the question we’re always wrestling with as we work with IT companies, educators, and parents – do we just need better technology, or do we need more education and the teaching of ethics and morals, or do we just shrug it off because adolescents will always pull pranks like this?

Also, could this be considered a form of cyberbullying?  The article makes me think of how some other misbehaviors might be “staged” in a creative fashion by youth using hardware and software to make “evidence” that incriminates another person.  We’ve already heard of impersonation where images of parents’ signatures are inserted by their kids into official documents they (the parents) are to sign.  And we’ve heard of youth impersonating their peers through sites that anonymize emails and text messages – which sometimes has led to conflict and violence in the real world.  When we discuss various forms of cyberbullying, impersonation is rare as compared to other types.  I’m thinking, though, that it’s a pretty serious form that merits closer examination.  I also wonder if policy and practice needs to be targeted and specific in highlighting the wrongfulness of impersonation, or simply addressed through general prevention and response strategies for cyberbullying….

  1. I believe there are a couple of actions that need to be taken into action to help prevent this "speed pimping". First I think kids are not being taught any morals or even know the major difference between right and wrong. Second I think better technology, can't this camera or possibly the person executing the citation notice that the tag doesn't match the type of car it's on? Also shouldn't the person who is "taking" the plate receive a citation as well?

  3. "Speed pimping" does not seem like cyberbullying to me. Yes computer technology is used, however no for bullying over the internet. That could be compared to a student falsifying a letter of another student, but they used a computer to type and print it out.

I agree. "Speed pimping" is something that kids should consider across the (moral) line. Jokes are jokes, pranks are pranks, and wrong is wrong. I strongly believe that the moral right and wrong taught in school must be reinforced at home through parenting. It would be nice to see technology improved so that this mix up does happen, but I’m sure confronting this scenario to the authorities would end in the ticket being dismissed.

  5. Generally, when you think of a bully, you think of some heavy set kid who throws you up against a locker and makes you give them your lunch money. Using that scenario, the bully doesn't necessarily WANT your lunch money, what he/she REALLY wants is to feel like they have power over you by forcing you to do something against your desire. This "Speed Pimping" thing is the same as the above mentioned situation. The only difference is that the bully is using someone else to get your 'lunch money'…they're using the Maryland government to do their dirty work. I don't think there is any doubt that this IS a form of bullying, but what can be done? Really? I suppose we COULD invest some more money into technology and create a machine that can detect a fake plate over a real one, but there's one problem: the kids will just find another way to do it. Look at the effort Hollywood made to stop piracy (as it relates to DVDs). All that money spent on encryption is pretty much a waste because people are STILL finding ways to illegally copy DVDs (and BluRay discs also for that matter). What we need to do is get to the root of the problem (like Saku said): we need to implant a set of morals in these kids so they know it's not cool to make someone pay $40 for something they did not do. Parents need to step up to the plate.

  7. I don't think enough people realize this is as big of a problem as it is. That's why you need to google your child's name. If someone is impersonating them, you need to know. It's not bullying anymore — it's Identity Theft.

  9. I'm joking of course, getting other people a fine does kinda cross the line, but you guys need to lighten up. You make it seem like I'm going to get punched through my computer by a "cyberbully." I wouldn't mind beating whoever coined that term though.

  11. i completely disagree with Saku! Just because they aren't using computers goesn't mean that they are not cyber bullies. they are still using a form of moreden dat technology to bully others. lol… you must b a liberal!

  13. Ok. I really don't think that it's cyberbullying, though it is bullying, so LB, and I'm not a Liberal (by the way). I think that there are things that could be implicated through better technology, and parents could teach better, but I think we blame things too much on everyone except the perpetrator him/herself. As a teenager, I have the opportunity to do wrong, but it is only the teenager's fault if they have been taught right from wrong and choose consciously to pull these mean "pranks".

  15. Impersonating others goes hand in hand with cyber bullying. I've been stalked, trashed and bashed by a cyber bully….an estranged sister who is nearly sixty years old believe it or not, for several years. Her abusive cyber bullying is in the most severest of forms. She has not just stalked and harassed me over the internet for years, she has even created so many fictitious user names including that of our mother who has dementia as well as using my own name, to write and post hateful comments. I've spent years contacting websites asking them to remove the abusive comments and many have complied, but there are quite a few such as forums, where no one takes the responsibilit of the site and its nearly impossible to find out who owns the site or operates the site in order to hold someone accountable. I don't consider her abusive cyber bullying, in any way shape or form, a prank. This woman knows what she's doing and has refused to stop. I've contacted the police in my area and her area but they won't do anything to her about it. I've contacted an attorney and they want a ten thousand dollar retainer just to get started! I'm not made of money.

So what is the answer to putting a halt to the cyber bullying? The stalking and getting websites to abide by their own TOS policies? Perhaps most of the cyber bullying occurs with teenagers, but I'm fifty years old and my estranged sister is older than I am! There's no excuse for this type of abusive behavior.

  17. Speed pimping??? honestly, nobody does that! you guys are over reacting. now i understand that cyberbullying is a big deal. i understand that some action has to be taken but you people are pushing things way over the line. now i am a teenager. i am 14 going on 15. NOBODY HAS EVER TRIED TO TAKE MY LUNCH MONEY OR ANYBODY ELSE'S IN ANY OF MY SCHOOLS. i have gone to three different districts and it never happens. people are being overrated. you all think that common bullying is taking lunch money or shoving someone in a locker. that is not modern bullying. now kids use their words to bully. cyberbullying is when people say mean things, threats, etc. over e mail, IM, or something else along those lines. SPEED PIMPING IS NOT CYBERBULLYING! ITS JUST BEING STUPID, MEAN, AND RECKLESS! i think if some of you people spent some time in a middle school or high school, you would be able to see what bullying really is now. ask your children if you can use their myspace, facebook, twitter, email, etc. if you look on their profile, messages, comments, or other people's profiles you will surely get a glimpse of cyber bullying.

people should be punished for speed pimping, but dont try to consider it cyberbullying. because it really isnt. now im not one of the people who will repeatedly check this so dont start talking about this and acting like i dont have a right to an opinion because you know i wont see what you said and i wont be able to defend my position.

so with this said, i am going to continue doing my cyberbullying research for my term paper. you have all stated some good points, and this website has really helped me.

    thank you,

    Kurt

  19. i must say, i completely agree with Kurt. Kurt has an inside view on this bullying stuff. He/She obviously knows more about it than the other people who are commenting on this post. and i also agree with kurt that speed bullying IS NOT A FORM OF CYBERBULLYING!

  21. I'm not sure about the "speed pimping" deal.

Impersonation online, however, is a form of Cyberbullying.

If you have ever had this happen to you, the question would not need to be asked.

Googling your own name, and finding sites "you" supposedly made

makes you feel very violated, scared, angry, and helpless. I am also

older, and with Prospective Employers going online to check on you,

this could also be damaging in other ways. These impersonators can

put your first and last name online; something which you may never do.

Also, Goodness knows they can put anything on these sites which "YOU"

are supposedly making. It is very scary what they can do to you; please stop and think how far

    someone can go with this.

  23. When we think of identity theft, the first thing that comes to mind is someone losing their personal information such credit card, social security number and etcetera to a petty thief. I’ve discovered that identity theft is just another method used by cyber- bullies to incriminate or embarrass a particular person by using his/her personal information, photo and etcetera as a tool of humiliation. I recently read an article about a man taping into his coworkers Facebook account to get their personal information so he would be able to get into their personal computer to retrieve nude photos or explicit email for his pleasure

  25. Teens commonly use software such as Adobe Photoshop for malicious intent. Using this software they can alter photographs and post them on social networks such as Facebook. The intent of this form of bullying is to doctor a photo so that the victim is in an uncompromising position which will humiliate the person. Once some of these photographs are on the internet they may be retrievable even if deleted. An prime example of cyberbullying through photoshopping occured recently in Estero, Florida. Two teenage girls created facebook pages with fake nude pictures of a classmate. Although the girls meant it to merely be a joke, the victim was ridiculed by classmates because of these photos. This is just an example of many instances where teenagers misuse facebook.

  27. The idea that the internet is available to so many people creates many opportunities for people to remain anonymous. Social media websites, such as Facebook and Myspace, allow users to create an account with as little as a valid email address. This in turn allows individuals to create fake accounts under fake names and add people as if it were a real account. False accounts are created to spy on boyfriends and girlfriends, friends, and even to spread rumors. Even though an account may have a valid email address, a profile picture, and a user operating the count, does not mean it’s a legitimate account.
